Reliable mine water control is achieved with XPEL, enabling operators to cut stored volumes, maintain safer access and stabilize performance in surface and underground mining conditions.

MINE WATER MANAGEMENT

Decades of mine water expertise sit behind XPEL, giving operators a solution built for the realities of modern mining where inflows, geotechnical risk and regulatory pressure shape daily performance.

XPEL delivers stable water control across open-pit and underground settings, providing the most cost-effective mine water management solution for reducing stored volumes, maintaining safer access and sustaining production in variable conditions. This capability reflects a long history of engineering systems that perform in the world’s toughest mining regions.

The evaporation platform manages large volumes, high solids and difficult water chemistry with consistent, high-rate output. Mines rely on this stability through heavy rainfall, seasonal inflow spikes and extreme weather, limiting dependence on pumping and hauling and reducing operational disruption around active work areas.

Engineered for durability and autonomous operation, XPEL brings field-proven reliability to remote and harsh environments. Low maintenance requirements, automated response to changing conditions and long service life enable mining teams to strengthen compliance, reduce environmental exposure and anchor long-term water strategies with a solution engineered for sustained performance.

Built on decades of engineering practice in demanding industrial environments, XPEL provides operators a technically grounded approach to mine-water control that remains measurable, predictable and proven. This depth of experience informs a solution that performs reliably under pressure, maintains stable output across changing site conditions and provides long-term certainty for operators working in complex mining regions.

XPEL supports key mining applications, providing stable water reduction across pit dewatering, tailings water control and high-volume inflow management.

  • XPEL supports ZLD programs by removing water through evaporation so that mines can minimize liquid releases while managing the remaining concentrated brine within regulated systems.

  • Evaporation lowers the total volume of acidic water requiring management, easing pressure on containment infrastructure and supporting long-term site stability without altering water chemistry.

  • XPEL reduces excess water stored within tailings facilities by evaporating large volumes and helping operators manage ongoing inflows and rainfall impacts more effectively.

  • High-capacity evaporation systems help reduce accumulated pit water, improving access, maintaining safer working conditions and supporting consistent mining productivity.

  • Engineered evaporation reduces the volume of process water requiring disposal, helping operators relieve pressure on discharge points and downstream handling assets.

  • Evaporation removes pure water from saline streams, increasing concentration while decreasing total liquid volume, helping operators manage brine storage more efficiently.

  • XPEL complements wastewater treatment plants by reducing incoming or residual volumes that exceed treatment capacity, helping stabilize operations during peak demand.

  • By reducing stored water across multiple locations, XPEL improves hydraulic control and helps sites maintain a more predictable total water balance under changing inflow conditions.

  • XPEL supports treatment plants by evaporating excess liquid that cannot be fully processed, reducing hydraulic load and contributing to more stable plant operation.

  • Evaporation provides an alternative pathway for managing excess wastewater volume, reducing the strain on mechanical or biological treatment systems without altering water quality.

  • XPEL helps reduce standing stormwater volumes after high-inflow events, easing pressure on containment areas and improving site resilience during extreme weather.

  • Evaporation assists watershed programs by lowering excessive water accumulation within controlled areas, supporting broader water-balance strategies across industrial or municipal sites.

  • XPEL supports zero effluent discharge objectives with systems that close the loop, reduce waste volumes, and improve environmental stewardship.

  • Evaporation systems reduce overflow and bypass volumes during peak inflow periods, supporting stable operation without performing any treatment or purification function.

  • Water accumulation within closed loop mining systems is reduced through mechanical evaporation, supporting controlled reuse and stable operation where discharge is restricted or prohibited.

  • XPEL evaporation systems reduce mining wastewater volumes prior to reinjection, easing pressure on subsurface disposal systems and supporting controlled, compliant disposal.

XPEL partnered with a cobalt mining operation in Missouri, USA, to deliver a high-performance water management solution for its tailings storage facility (TSF).  Learn how our advanced technologies provided reliable control of TSF water volumes, helping the site maintain safe operations and regulatory compliance.

Snowmelt - Emergency response water management e-book.

Be prepared for the unique challenges posed by excess snowfall. Spring freshets and snow that has accumulated within the tailings footprint area begin to melt, and the resultant water must either be discharged or contained within the TSF. During these short and intense periods, the daily water inflow exceeds the discharge capacity of a mine, resulting in an increase in water levels in TSFs.

TESTED & PROVEN

XPEL evaporators are tested & proven in mine water management applications.

Capability

XPEL’s evaporation system is engineered to manage the demanding conditions of mine water management, including high-volume inflows from rainfall, groundwater seepage and tailings storage facilities. The system delivers consistent, high-throughput evaporation with low maintenance and 24/7 automated operation, giving mines reliable performance without constant oversight.

Integrated Environmental Management System (EMS) technology monitors environmental conditions in real time and adjusts system performance to maintain stability and compliance in dynamic mine environments.

Experience

With decades of involvement in mining, XPEL has coordinated and commissioned large-scale water-management projects for major operators in North America, the Middle East and Australia.

Field deployments include systems achieving more than 2,970 m³/hour (13,200 GPM) at an Arizona copper and molybdenum mine. This demonstrates proven reliability in high-demand environments, reinforcing safety, compliance and long-term water strategy across complex mining operations.
