NT alumina refinery - case study

Red-mud pond dewatering system for an alumina refinery in Australia’s Northern Territory.

XPEL supported an alumina refinery in the Northern Territory, Australia, that needed a sustainable way to reduce excess water stored in its red-mud ponds. We deployed a large-scale evaporation package built around our 200/100 evaporator units, designed to stabilize pond levels and support continuous refinery operations.

The 16 x 200/100 evaporation systems package provided a combined volume throughput of 3,200 GPM (720 m³/hour), enabling rapid and consistent water reduction across the red-mud storage areas. This performance reduced environmental risk, supported compliance, and strengthened the refinery's overall operational stability.

XPEL water evaporators in a red mud ponds for an alumina refinery.

Advanced Water Evaporation Systems for alumina refining by XPEL.

This refinery managed significant volumes of process water and residue liquids stored within red-mud ponds. Rising water levels placed pressure on storage integrity, created environmental exposure risks, and added operational strain. XPEL advanced mechanical evaporation systems offered a practical way to reduce stored water quickly and maintain safe operating conditions across the refinery.

In this project, 16 XPEL evaporators delivered 720 m³/hour of evaporation capacity. This evaporation output helped the refinery maintain safe pond levels, reduce environmental exposure, and support stable day-to-day operations.

Engineered reliability delivered by XPEL.

  • Large-scale water reduction: Multiple XPEL evaporators delivered strong throughput across large red-mud pond areas. This capacity supported predictable and efficient dewatering.

  • Operational stability: Consistent evaporation helped maintain safe storage conditions and reduced strain on refinery operations.

  • Environmental compliance: Lower stored water volumes reduced environmental exposure and supported regulatory requirements for residue management.
