NSW landfill leachate management - case study

Dewatering solution for a NSW municipal landfill.

XPEL solved the rising leachate volumes of a municipal landfill in New South Wales, Australia. The site required a compact system that could stabilize storage levels and support ongoing compliance. We implemented an evaporation system package designed for municipal use and built to operate efficiently across varying water qualities.

The two XPEL 40E evaporator units processed 64 GPM (14.5 m³/hour) and supported steady leachate reduction across the site. This performance lowered environmental risk, supported regulatory obligations, and strengthened day-to-day landfill operations.

XPEL floating evaporator in a landfill excess water pond

Advanced water evaporation system for municipal facilities by XPEL.

This landfill faced increasing leachate volumes driven by rainfall and ongoing waste decomposition. Limited storage space and variable inflows placed pressure on containment areas and increased environmental risk. XPEL’s mechanical evaporation system offered a practical and sustainable way for the site to reduce stored leachate, maintain stable operating conditions, and meet regulatory expectations.

In this project, the two-unit XPEL system delivered evaporation throughput of 14.5 m³/hour. This capacity helped the landfill maintain safe storage levels and ease operational burdens in a compact, low-maintenance configuration tailored for municipal sites.

Engineered reliability delivered by XPEL.

  • Compact, efficient operation: XPEL evaporation units delivered steady evaporation in a small footprint. This efficiency suited municipal sites with space constraints or variable leachate loads.

  • Environmental protection: Consistent volume reduction lowered the risk of contamination and overflow. This stability supported responsible landfill management and safeguarded the surrounding land.

  • Simple, reliable performance: The system operated with minimal maintenance requirements. This reliability enabled municipal operators to manage leachate and meet regulatory expectations confidently.
