QLD waste processing - case study

Turn-key floating evaporation system for a Queensland waste processing facility.

XPEL worked in close partnership with the Queensland Government and the Department of Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation (DETSI) to help a major waste processing and resource recovery facility find a practical way to stabilize water balance across its operation. We supplied a floating evaporation system supported by an Environmental Management System (EMS) to deliver safe, reliable, and continuous water reduction.

Managing wastewater in the region poses unique challenges due to the high humidity, frequent rainfall, and complex environmental regulations. Despite these challenges, the XPEL evaporation system consistently delivered a significant reduction in water levels, not only in Queensland but also in a variety of climates around the world.

This pontoon XPEL evaporation system processed 190 GPM (43 m³/hour) and operated around the clock with minimal maintenance. This performance reduced the volume of stored wastewater across the facility and lowered the risk of contamination from excess leachate. The solution strengthened environmental resilience and improved water balance control in a high-demand operating environment.

XPEL floating water evaporators in a Maranoa waste processing facility

Advanced Water Evaporation Systems for municipal waste processing by XPEL.

Waste processing facilities generate complex wastewater streams through decomposition, filtration, and treatment activities. Effective evaporation from XPEL evaporation system reduces stored water, limits environmental exposure, and helps facilities manage disposal costs, especially in regions with high rainfall and strict regulatory oversight. XPEL mechanical evaporation also supports sustainable leachate management by lowering excess volumes and improving site control.

Meeting DETSI guidelines is one of the most challenging parts of water management, whether the focus is effluent, leachate, mine-affected water or produced water. These requirements place strict limits on how water is handled and stored, and many facilities struggle to keep pace. XPEL brings engineered evaporation capacity shaped by decades of field experience, giving operators a clearer, more controlled pathway to remain compliant and maintain stable performance under regulated conditions.

In this project, the floating system consistently processed 190 GPM (43 m³/hour) of volume while managing variable water quality. This approach was well-suited to the Maranoa waste and resource recovery operation, which faced increased wastewater loads, limited storage capacity, and the need for continuous volume reduction. The solution minimized environmental impacts through their sustainable approach to leachate mangement, in turn, preventation environmental contamination.

Engineered reliability delivered by XPEL.

  • Adaptive performance: The system handled variable water qualities common to waste and resource recovery sites. This capability supported stable performance in changing operating conditions.

  • Integrated environmental management: XPEL Environmental Management System (EMS) provided strong visibility and automated control. These tools helped operators maintain compliance and respond quickly to shifts in wastewater volume.

  • Low-maintenance, continuous operation: The floating design enabled year-round operation with minimal upkeep. This reliability supported long-term water balance control and reduced operational burden.
